You can upgrade as long as the new operating system you want to install will run on your Mac. Apple has published lists of the Macs that will run on any specified version of the OS, so you should check that. Or do a web search something like "Mac OS what hardware will run OS 11.1 Big Sur". Just substitute whichever OS you're looking at upgrading to and replace "OS 11.1 Big Sur" with the OS you want to install.
