Bootcamp ‘enumerating pre-install packages’ driver problem

Hi, I’ve been trying to set up bootcamp and have windows 10 installed on an external SSD (using an iMac 27inch 2020 with Big Sur) but when I try to install bootcamp in windows it freezes trying to install the drivers with the error message ‘enumerating pre-install packages’. It’s driving me crazy, no pun intended. Any help massively appreciated.

iMac 27″, macOS 11.0

Installing Windows on an external storage device is not supported. Your installation will work much better if you use the internal disk. Newer BC versions can look at environment to make decisions. If you must use an external disk, install Windows on the internal disk first, and then clone it to external disk after all BC drivers have been fully installed and functional on the internal disk.
