Does the Activity monitor on a M1 based Mac show 4 cores or 8?

Apple keeps calling it a 8 core design, but I think unlike other designs, with 8 symmetrical cores, it has either 4 high performance cores OR 4 high efficiency cores, but never uses all 8 at once. And if it shows 8 threads or 4 threads only indicating a lack of hyper-threading. Anybody with a M1 based Mac care to share what they see in Activity Monitor?
