Updating OS of old MacBook pro?

Hello,

I'm planning to install a later operating system on an old MacBook pro that is running incredibly slowly and needing some attention...

  • MacBook Pro 13" (mid 2010)
  • 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
  • 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3
  • Currently running OS X Yosemite version 10.10.3

Please can someone advise me, which is the most recent OS that this MacBook should be able to run? Probably still stuck in about 2015, but that must be an improvement on the current situation...

Thanks in advance.

Following up on Bob's excellent advice, we can consider what is slow with the current OS.

1) Is the computer slow to boot, and do apps take a long time to launch but run OK once running?

2) Do apps and web functions "stall" for a few seconds in the middle of a task?

3) Do apps work without stalling but seem too slow in executing anything OTHER THAN a save?

The fastest and most effective way for us to advise you on a possible upgrade path is for your to post a system configuration snapshot that will let us diagnose the issue in one go, and without making you play a boring and protracted game of "20 Questions." Fortunately there is a safe, secure way to do that.

We can quickly and within the confines of these forums help you determine what issues are at play if you use EtreCheck, available free from the Mac App Store here:

We can see hard data about drive performance, software issues, and RAM usage. Etrecheck is the development of a long-serving and trusted contributor here expressly for displaying information in these forums to help us help you. It will not reveal any personal or secure information.

Run it, select “Report" from the left-hand pane (scroll down to the bottom of that pane to find):

When its report displays, click the "Share Report" icon from EtreCheck’s toolbar and then "Copy report” from the resulting dropdown.

⚠️ Please DO NOT highlight the text in the report before using Etrecheck’s “Copy report” command—that will garble the formatting and make the report slower and harder to evaluate.

NOTE: Changes in late 2018 to the forum software require you use the “Additional Text" icon (see example below) to embed the report into a post:

Paste the report into the resulting “Additional Text” window:

Thanks Allan!

In answer to your questions: The computer is very slow to boot; apps take a long time to launch (a minute or so!). I’ve not used this computer in a long time, but it seems that every six months I turn it on and it’s slower than the last time. I just tried Microsoft Word, and it’s working okay; doesn’t seem to stall. Quitting Word and then clicking on a Word doc on the desktop, the app opens much faster the second time, but still a bit sluggish. Internet Explorer is not so bad; a google search was reasonably fast (relative to the long time it takes to boot up etc.). YouTube is telling me to update my browser and won’t load properly.

Here’s an EtreCheck report (attached).

Thanks for your help!

Hi BobTheFisherman,

Thanks so much for this. Yes, I know it’s an old machine without much life left. It only gets used (occasionally, more if it were running faster) to play some news or music via YouTube etc. in my kitchen. It’s a glorified radio! (Or maybe just an obsolete/ vintage MacBook!)

  • I certainly didn’t expect it to run an operating system beyond maybe 2015, but how can I find out which is the latest that it will actually run?
  • I didn’t know about the problems with Trusteer – that was recommended by my bank years ago. I think I have it on my main MacBook as well. I'll uninstall it.
  • I’ll uninstall the VPN. I used it when travelling years ago.

Thank you!
