Reopen windows when logging back in

When performing Shut Down/Start Up or Restart there is an option to "Reopen windows when logging back in?" I check this box and windows do reopen however appear higher within the monitor so that controls (e.g., close, minimize, full screen), other than the menu bar, are not available. Scrolling is not an option. All I can do is use the View menu option to switch to full screen and then press "esc" which returns the window to normal viewing. I'm on Big Sur v11.1. Is there a known problem or some setting change required?

Hi there gregorydgones,

We understand you're experiencing an issue with your windows reopening to different locations when restarting your MacBook Pro, and we'd like to see how we can assist.

Do you notice this with specific app windows, or with all windows you leave open on your Mac?

Also, restart your MacBook Pro in safe mode, and see if the issue persists there and after restarting normally again: How to use safe mode on your Mac

Thanks!

Hello and thank you for your quick response.

This behavior appears to be app agnostic, meaning it occurs to different apps (apple or 3rd party) at different times. With the exception of Messages, I expand my apps windows to consume the entire monitor (but not full screen view) so that I still have the apps bar at the bottom displayed. The problem appears to occur only with apps in my expanded view, i.e., Messages always appears centered where I place it. I've confirmed this performing multiple normal "Restart" and "Shut Down/Start".

Upon one "Restart" I also noticed that the desktop image was also misaligned, up and to the left. This created a behavior where the mouse would not right or down in any application beyond the right and bottom borders of the desktop image. A "Shut Down/Start" corrected this behavior.

Trying your suggestion to start in Safe Mode, I shut down the Mac, I pressed and held the power button for 10 seconds but the startup options window did not display and the Mac powered off as if I performed a forced shut down. I tried this multiple times with the same result. I did notice that the Apple logo appeared after ~5 seconds and then went dark at ~8 seconds followed by aforementioned power off. So I cannot complete this test as proposed.

Any next thoughts? Thanks.

Is your Mac an M1 (brand new Silicon chip) or an Intel processor?

If the latter, you need to follow the Intel directions which means you need to press the S key during boot up. I will take some time.

Personally, I prefer not to have any windows automatically re-open as it takes longer for the boot up process and it is just as easy to launch an app when you actually need it, so this is just a guess, but I do not think that you can have it set to open in the exact same spot. May be wrong though.....
