USB-C multi port adapter

I just recently bought an iPad Air 4 and would like to access my files from a Toshiba external hard drive. I bought a comsol multi port adapter, however the “file” app did not recognize the drive.

can anyone recommend what sort of adaptor or dongle I need for this to work?
