Watch not syncing with iphone

My activity app does not sync with my phone. The only way I can get it to work is uncoupling the devices, resetting the watch to factory settings, and then recoupling them. It’ll work for a day or two then the problem happens again. Both are on current iOS. I’ve tried using the other ideas on here (putting in airplane mode, restarting both devices etc). I’ve lost a year of workouts and getting ready to buy a new fitness system.
