I-Phone 4 Bluetooth pairing with BMW

I have tried to pair the I-Phone 4 to my 2008 5 series BMW unsuccessfully. When I checked compatible phones on BMW website, 3GS was the latest phone. When I called the dealer, they said that BMW may come out with a software upgrade later this year AND I could have it installed for USD 439. What a rip off!! If I would have known this, I would NOT have bought my I-Phone. Isn’t there an APP for this???

I have successfully paired my phone with my 2007 5 series. I only have issue and that is a slight delay with an incoming call. The phone has ring for 2 or 3 seconds before the car picks it up and starts to ring in the car.If I answer it before the car rings the call is on the phone. Outgoing calls work immediately. But is is a slight niggle really. It works fine and the contacts have all copied over.

I'd expect it to work.

No app. Sounds like someone else succeeded with a 2007 5 series BMW, so ... . If that fails use an external BT device like the BlueAnt S4: Works great, fits on visor and cost about $90!

I have a 2007 5 Series (picked up at the factory in Munich) and a 2005 3 Series - both with Bluetooth.

On the 5 (my wife's car) we have both phones - an IP4 and Motorola RZR paired.

Both are a piece of cake.

Start again:

Delete both your phone from the car using iDrive (if in the "previously paired" list) and from your iPhone.

Make the phone discoverable, and then let the car discover the phone. When it "finds" the phone, a screen comes up asking you to enter a "pin" on the phone - enter any (suggest four) digits you like.

The car then asks you to enter the same four digits - this is the only tricky part - once you have selected the four digits, click the iDrive up one notch to the enter option. Click down on the iDrive and you should be paired.

If you have a very large contact list, I suggest you switch off the option to sync contacts on the iPhone Bluetooth settings.

I have a 2007 335i and pair with my 3GS running 4.0.1. The pairing is via bluetooth which as far as I know hasn't changed on the iP4.

The phone hardware has changed admittedly but can't see how this affects the sync with the car. Give it another go I'm sure it'll work.

On another note I had a look at the sync cradle yesterday and I presume the 3GS cradle doesn't work for the iP4. £70 for a piece of plastic, only from BMW!

I have a 535XI and have the same issue with the iPhone 4. I had NO problem with the 3G and the 4.0 originally but the paired iphone in the car was accidentally deleted (do NOT allow children to play with the iKnob) and now, with the latest OS upgrade, it simply WILL NOT pair. The car will not "discover" the phone but the phone will discover the car. I put in the four digit number in the phone and then the car asks if I want to accept the "device" but when I put in the same four digit number in the car and hit the return button the phone says "could not pair with device". Obviously both the phone and the car "see" each other but they simply won't pair. I have done this a bazillion times (slight exaggeration). And just because I could afford the car it doesn't mean I want to pay $400+ for the dealer added device. I didn't buy it new!

(as an aside, a "Bazillion" times reminds me when George Bush was told that three Brazilian soldiers had died in Iraq. He broke down into uncontrollable sobs, and asked his aid exactly how many there are in a "Brazilian"!)

It WILL pair!! You can do it four bazillion times, but you need to delete the phone from the car, and the car from the phone and start again. Start the car, make the phone discoverable, go to start pairing on the car, phone will find the car, select the car, car asks for number, enter the number on the phone, then on the car - and this is the tricky bit, make sure you click up on the iDrive to select the confirm or enter or whatever it says.

That should do it - you might have to wait a few seconds. If you have a stack of contacts on the phone, it might be better to select NOT to sync contacts - makes it faster and less prone to errors to pair.

Hope this helps.
