My camera roll will not back up to icloud since I got an iphone xr

The photos on my old iphone 5 were and still are backed up to icloud but any subsequent photos taken on my XR have never backed up to icloud. Ive connected to the internet, left it switched on and plugged in overnight to back up and in the morning it says successful back up but my photos are still nowhere to be found on icloud.
Hi. Thanks for response. There is ample space available. It backed up fine until I upgraded to an XR. Everything else backs up so I get the 'successful backup' message yet can't find recent photos since my upgrade.
Were the photos stored in iCloud or solely on-device?
So the issue is the missing photos from the XR?
Then it sounds like those photos (from the XR) aren't syncing to iCloud, correct?
