I have macOS Sierra on my macbook air (2015); is it necessary to upgrade to newer OS's ? I understand Apple will no longer support this system after Jan. 2021 and I'm ok with that.

What is the downside of staying with Sierra?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.12

If the issue is about the dropping of support for 32 bit applications in Catalina and Big Sur, one can always move up to Mojave - last macOS still supporting 32 bit apps. Though, as @ Eau Rouge has mentioned, even Mojave is fading for Security Updates at this point.
