Install failing on Sierra and High Sierra from Yosemite.

Trying to update from Yosemite 10.10.5 to Sierra or High Sierra. Already backed up computer, El Capitan never loaded either even though it said it finished installing. No system restart at the end. Memory and storage are more than enough for install. Help?

iMac, OS X 10.10

Open your Safari browser and then click on this link.

How to get old versions of macOS – Apple Support

Go to Check Compatibility to see if your mac qualifies for the OS upgrade you want.

Then go to the Download OS section and click on the OS you want to install.

If you want to install El Capitan or Sierra these download an Install****.dmg to your

Downloads folder, there is then a three stage process before you get the installer app

in your Applications folder.

If you want High Sierra it connects to the App Store High Sierra download page

it should say Get or Download, this downloads Install macOS High Sierra.app

to your Applications folder.

Before upgrading make a full back up of your Mac.

Check that third party apps you use have updates available for the new OS.

https://roaringapps.com

Check that your printers/ scanners etc have updated drivers and software available for the new OS.

Connect your mac to your router via cable rather than rely on WiFi.

Do not use your mac while it is downloading

and do not use any other devices that share the same internet connection.

If the App Store says ‘Open’ then it is detecting a previous download of the install app

go to the Applications folder locate Install macOS ******.app.

Move it to the Trash, empty the Trash.

Restart, click on the link again, the App Store should say ‘Get' or 'Download'.

These are the instructions fr getting El Capitan or Sierra installed on your mac.

The instructions below mention Sierra, if you are installing El Capitan just replace

any mention of Sierra with El Capitan.

How to get old versions of macOS – Apple Support

Go to Download macOS and click on macOS Sierra 10.12

This downloads InstallOS.dmg to your Downloads folder.

The next section can only be done on a mac that is capable of running Sierra,

a mac that came preinstalled with an OS later than Sierra will refuse to do the next bit.

When downloaded open to get InstallOS.pkg, double-click on

that and an installation window will open, read and follow the prompts,

this does not install Sierra but uses the InstallOS.pkg to create the

Install macOS Sierra.app which you will find in your Applications folder.

(If the installation window asks which disk you want to install to, you must pick

the disk that you are booted to at the time. Not any internal or external disk that

you want to eventually install Sierra on, that is for later.)

To start the installation of Sierra double click on the Install macOS Sierra.app.

The copy of the install app self deletes after installing Sierra, so make sure you keep a copy of the InstallOS.dmg

if you need it in future, or you could just make a copy of the Install OS X Sierra.app prior to installing and moving it to

an external drive for safe keeping.
