Apple TV with tvOS 14.3 no longer powers off Sony XBR TVs

Until recently, I was able to power on or off my Sony XBR A8F TV using the remote for my Apple TV 4K. This no longer works.

Curiously this worked fine until the Sony software version 6.655. Once updated to 6.714, this feature no longer works, and I can only power on the TV using the Apple TV remote.

I confirmed this behavior on another Sony TV, an XBR 800E, which worked perfectly well until Sony software version 6.655, but stopped working after updating to 6.714.

Sounds like an issue with 6.714. Has anyone seen the same issue, or have any suggestion, like how to engage Sony?

All, after a very long support call with Sony's tech support, this issue was acknowledged as having been observed in many situations and is related to the 6.714 software release. Sony's engineering team is 'working on it'. I was advised to check periodically the Sony Support site for software updates (since this is faster then waiting for the automatic update).

the ability to turn off the tv is called HDMI-CEC Consumer Electronics Control - Wikipedia

likely the tv update reset some settings back to default or change what default was disabling hdmi-cec

how to re-enable it I can't say but it would be in the settings menus of the tv

Thanks for clarifying this. I have explored all menus on these TVs to no avail.

I also tried a few things recommended in similar articles written in the past year:

turn off AirPlay - same results
disable HDMI CEC on the TV, disable remote control of devices on ATV then put both in sleep mode; disconnect the HDMI cable; wait a minute; then wake both devices manually and reactivate the CEC controls - same results

what puzzles me is that, other than the software updates on the Sony and the tvOS 14.3, nothing else has changed.

Some of the members of this discussion forum who have had this problem were able to restore the functionality using the above steps, or by replacing the HDMI cable - I happen to be using high grade HDMI cables as needed for Dolby Vision so I doubt my cable is part of the problem.

Perplexing, that’s for sure.
