This is a new watch and I charged overnight once to 80% which is the most it has managed . Over the last week it is taking 3 hours to add 15-20% and overnight is no better. I have tried the various fixes including switching off Bluetooth and also repositioning after a few mins with the same results.
this makes it unusable and I am contemplating a return to my trusty Fitbit.

Have you tried different charge sources? I usually charge using a portable USB battery pack. I've used three different models, and they charge at different rates due to different output wattage. Of course, if you're using an Apple branded wall plug charger, it should be optimum, and the results you're getting indicate a defective watch.
