How do I change the default application when opening a file in Finder?

When I click to open a Word file in Finder, i want to open LibreOffice rather than Word. If I alt-click, I see a menu that includes LibreOffice, but the default is always Word. Can the default app be changed?


iMac, OS X 10.11

Select a document of that type in the Finder, choose Get Info from the File menu, click on Open With, specify the desired application, and press the Change All button.
