Roman numerals in the preface, and normal/arabic numbers in the text, on pages?

I have successfully splitted the document in two sections, so that it counts from 1 to 6, and then from 1 to 11 (after page 6). I am writing an academic paper, and would like to have my preface numbered with roman numerals, but when I try to change the format of the numbers in the first section, the numbers in the other section also become roman. Is it possible to have two different number types in the same document? In the page numbers in the bottom.
