App-specific passwords not working

- it turns out that the email address must be ".....@icloud.com" or ".......@me.com"
The email address I always use is ".......@mac.com". Simply changed it in the account settings to "......
@me.com PLUS the app specific password and it worked.
Why does apple support not mention this?
