connecting iPhone to MacBook Air
Why do I have to upgrade to macOS Big Sur in order to connect my phone to my Mac? I am happy with using macOS Catalina and don't want to change. This seems completely unnecessary.

The "software update" is just a small update needed to be compatible
with the iPhone or iOS on the phone itself. It does not install a new
version of macOS.
If you actually needed a macOS update it would have
stated that your version of macOS is incompatible and
that you must upgrade to a newer version of macOS
(and would typically indicate the minimum version required).

My phone and the Macbook both are up to date. The only “update” is the upgrade to Big Sur macOS. Yet i get the same message I must update before using my phone.
