connecting iPhone to MacBook Air

Why do I have to upgrade to macOS Big Sur in order to connect my phone to my Mac? I am happy with using macOS Catalina and don't want to change. This seems completely unnecessary.

The "software update" is just a small update needed to be compatible

with the iPhone or iOS on the phone itself. It does not install a new

version of macOS.

If you actually needed a macOS update it would have

stated that your version of macOS is incompatible and

that you must upgrade to a newer version of macOS

(and would typically indicate the minimum version required).
