I plug in my Time Machine once a week, as part of my backup plan.

It's great that you are doing back ups. However, I would ask you if anything important would be lost if your computer failed today? Why not back up more often, like daily? I understand that it is possible that you may not add a lot or make many changes each day, but if yo do, I would recommend doing back ups more often.
Obviously only when you have scheduled Time Machine backups. Why do you want to disconnect it?
