I've created a group name for our family on icloud.com. However the new name is not coming over on our iphone's group text.

Hey there maespends,

Thanks for reaching back out and keeping us updated. To confirm, the group you created was created in your Outlook email account on your computer? If that is the case, than that might just be a contact group for your email.

Try going to a web browser and logging in to the iCloud website at www.iCloud.com

Once you are logged in to iCloud.com, click on the Contacts tab and press the "+" in the side bar, then choose "New Group". You can then name the group and add contacts to that group. Take a look at the full steps on creating a contact group here:

Create a group of contacts on iCloud.com

Once that contact group is created and synced on iCloud, you can then start a new message on your iPad by opening Messages, composing a new message, and type the name of the group you just created:

Use Messages on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Send a group text message on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

We hope this information helps.

Cheers!

Hello maespends,

Thanks for keeping us in the loop on this and trying those steps. Let's try something a bit different. When you are starting a new message in Messages, and you see the "Groups" selection in the top left, if you deselect all the groups except the group you wish to send a message to, does it show the contacts that you added to that group?

When you select only the group you created and hit Done, it should then show you only the contacts that you added to that group on iCloud. You can then select those contacts to add them to the first group message you send. Once that initial group message is sent, you can then re-name the message thread by following the steps outlined here:

Name a group text message on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Once you have named that group message thread, you will be able to find it and search it moving forward as long as it's not deleted.

Have a good rest of the day!

Hello maespends,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities! We understand you are seeing an issue with a contact group you created not syncing with your iPhone. We are happy to help provide some guidance.

We want to make sure that your contacts are set to sync with your iCloud account to ensure that the contact group reflects on your connected devices. To check that, if you go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud, is Contacts enabled?

Did you create this group on iCloud after you already had a group message text thread going for the participants, or are you trying to create a new group message thread? After confirming that iCloud contacts are syncing in settings, are you able to see the group if you create a new group text message to that group?

Send a group text message on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Keep us updated on how it goes, we want to help get this resolved!

Best Regards.

Thanks for trying to help me. I'm not sure what's wrong, but I think I have given up trying.

I was able to follow your directions, but it just defaulted to the current group thread of texts our family has going on. I'm back to square one with not being able to rename the group via the link you attached. On step 3, upon tapping info button, there is no option to "change name and photo." All I see in this order is: a map, send my current location, share my location, group participants, hide alerts, photos, links, documents.

Thank you so much for your willingness to help me.

Yes, iCloud is enabled and I was able to create the group in outlook at my desktop computer.

I created this group titled: Family, AFTER I already have a group message text thread with all family members. I am not opposed to starting a new thread but do not know how.

So...when I'm on my ipad beginning a new message, I can see "groups" in the top left corner of the screen. If I click on that, I see the following all checked on:

All iCloud

Family (my new group name)

All iPad.

If I unclick everything but Family and click done, I can see everyone individually, but don't know how to add them as a group titled family.

I did initially create the group on Outlook, but under iCloud. However, I tried it again only this time starting from icloud.com. I really hoped this was the issue. I could see my first group titled Family, so I created a new group called Familia. I followed the directions on the link you sent. After iCloud had time to refresh, I opened messages from my ipad and typed in the group name: Familia. I sent out a test text, but it went no where.

Trying it again only this time clicking the + in the top right to look for the contact Familia. It's not there. But in top left corner is the word Groups in blue color. If I click that, I see the following:

Groups

icloud

  • all iCloud
  • Familia
  • Family

Ipad

  • All Ipad

All of them are checked. Not sure what that means. I don't know where to go from here.
