How do I get OS 11 Big Sur to recognize the scanner part of my printer even though it recognizes the printer aspect wirelessly? I am using Preview to scan and it was working fine until recently.

My printer seems to be back to normal with wireless printing, scanning and Airprint working. I suspect that an update was download directly by the printer at some point. This printer does have this ability and I have been leaving it on for long periods hoping that this would happen.
All is right with the world until the next system update, I imagine.
I replaced the drivers yesterday and this got printing to work but scanning did not. I attempted to replace the firmware today, but after downloading the firmware updater, it told me that there is no firmware update for this printer.
I have installed the latest version of HP Smart. This application works fine with the scanner wirelessly, but preview does not. I assume the problem is with Big Sur and Preview and not with the HP driver software, which I have completely updated. I like the preview scanner dialog much better. It allows one to select scan areas and the general interface is much better than HP Smart.
Again, if I connect the HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 by USB, I can scan using preview with no problem.
Any ideas?
I have attached the printer using USB cables and both print and scan work fine. When using a wireless connection, print works but I cannot scan. In either case, AirPrint does not work. It did before.
AirPrint still does not work after all updates. It did work before.
