How do i update apple tv device from macbook pro on Big Sur?

I cannot update my apple tv device from wifi. update keeps crashing. The app store app also keeps crashing. So I am trying to update the software from my macbook pro on bigsur. Itunes is no longer available and i do not see it when i connect it to my macbook pro in finder - using a hdmi to usb-c connector cable.

What are my options to update the software on my Apple TV device without losing data/settings?

To restore your Apple TV HD through a computer, use this guide:

On newer versions macOS without iTunes, the Apple TV box should appear in the sidebar of a Finder window.

You would connect through USB. Not through HDMI, nor hdmi to usb-c connector cable.
