Edit-Substitutions options are greyed out

i want to enable/disable smart links but it is greyed out.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.14

I have the same problem. In fact, when I try to activate the smart links in a new message, it gives me a window with the smart links box unchecked, and I am unable to activate that check box (I click and noting happens). Working on a iMac desktop, on system 11.1.
