Recovery OS install fails to complete 2010 MBP

I've installed a new SSD drive to replace the failed hard drive in my old 2010 Macbook Pro. Have formated the the new drive as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" with a GUID partion. The start the recovery install it appears to run well right up to the end then the installer quits with no notice and I'm back to a start up folder with the "?" on it. What am I missing?
