how to cancel or delete an Apple ID?

Hello. I have an Apple ID that I have never used. However, it is associated with a payment method. Is it better just edit the account and to set the payment method to None. Or is it better to cancel or delete this Apple ID? In the last case, how do I cancel or delete an Apple ID? Thanks.
