I connected my iphone to my imac and got the message "A software update is required to connect to...". I am OS X 10.11.5 and before I install this update, will it update my operating system or just itunes?
If just itunes, will I also be able to synch a device with an older ios (my ipad) in addition to the newer ios on my iphone?

Your Mac is running a very old OS and you must upgrade at least to High Sierra to get the proper iTunes version.
I can't do that at this time as I use several programs that won't run on a newer system (I've tried) and I can't afford the several thousand dollars necessary to replace them. El Capitan works fine for me other than today's message.
So, I just need to know what this software update will do - will it update something in the OS or just in itunes?
Your only options is to buy more iCloud storage and use it for backup.
