Outgoing server for my email address is set to iCloud

I removed my email account and set it up again, now the outgoing server is set to iCloud and I cannot send emails anymore. I tried to add another SMTP outgoing server with my email providers data, it connects (connection doctor says) but won't send emails, because "The server response was: Authentication required".

Any ideas how to fix this? It is the same email address I use as my apple ID.

In the Mail/Preferences/Accounts/Account/Server Settings, did you set up Authentication? You may need to click on the server and click Edit SMTP server list to access the account.
