My Macbook Air doesn't recognise my iPhone 12 when I plug it in.

When I plug my iPhone into my computer, I don't have iTunes come up anymore, and I can't see my phone under devices in the finder window. When I go ty system information, it isn't available under usb either. My iPhone still charges when connected, though. My laptop is fully updated to Big Sur. I'm using a lightning to usb cable, but I had this same issue with my iPhone 6s, so I don't think the cable is the issue. Anyone know a fix?
