Hi there! I'd like to have some extra security on my macbook to avoid malware. I've done some research, and it seems that Malwarebytes is the most recommended anti-malware app for macs. I've seen some posts here that say to never download antivirus for mac, while others strongly encourage malwarebytes. Are there any risks to downloading or using it?

Malwarebytes is safe and is often recommended to remove malware you've already installed. I would not run it in real time scanning mode.

You can safely use the free version but I wouldn't pay any money for it.
There will be those who will proclaim that you can't get any malware, even though you can, however, the chances of you getting anything are so small that it's essentially a non-issue.
outside of a single kernel panic (subscription version) it caused I have used it numerous times and the developer was a frequent contributor to this forum at one time who defiantly had an understanding of macOS security. As said by others the free version is less intrusive.
Malwarebytes is trusted by many of the major responders on this web site. I just don't know if it is something you need running 24/7 on your computer unless it is in a risky environment with a lot of security careless users constantly downloading software to it from third party sites.
The 14-day trial runs in real-time mode, and the daemon that does that has the highest (-20) nice value to ensure it gets CPU time.
