"You shut down your computer because of a problem" – message after restarting

I regularly get the "You shut down your computer because of a problem" message after restarting – that is, without having shut down my computer. It happens often but not every time. I've tried reinstalling macOS 11, but that didn't solve it.

Any suggestions how to find out what's causing the issue?

I've run EtreCheck and will insert a report below.

I have the same problem. This started when I got the latest version of Big Sur.

  1. I select Restart... from the Apple Menu.
  2. I specify that I would like to reopen my open applications.
  3. Applications quit one by one. I save documents when I'm prompted to do so.
  4. After all the applications have quit, the screen goes dark.
  5. The computer restarts.
  6. I get the alert window shown above.
  7. When I log into my account, the applications I had open before the restart do not reopen.

It would be great to find a fix for this.
