Voicemail password

I have never known my voicemail password I’ve had the same number since I was very young. So I’ve tried numerous times to change the password under “change voicemail password” in settings, I can enter and re-enter a new password but then it just says “saving” and never finishes saving. I have tried to enter the password into my voicemail and can’t access it. I don’t get texts to access my voicemail like I’ve seen other users have and I don’t know where or how to set that up either. Do I need to get a password from my provider?
