Why do messages on my new iMac get sent back with an error for delivery and a (1) in front of every in phone number? How do I change this? Is this a HiSierra issue? or a computer issue?

Hey there cturse,

Would it be possible to temporarily delete one of the affected contacts, and one of the conversations threads in Messages, and then add the contact information back to test the issue? Also, are both your telephone number and Apple ID checked off in Messages > Preferences > iMessage?

If the issue continues after giving those steps a try you can reach out to Apple Support directly using the support link below.

Hello cturse,

Thanks for reaching out here in Apple Support Communities. Based on your post it appears that you're unable to send messages as expected on your Mac. We'll be happy to help out.

Does this seem to occur with multiple contacts?

Have you checked your contact information to make sure everything checks out?

Are you running the most recent version of macOS compatible with your Mac?

Have you tried signing out of Messages and back in to test?

Take a look at the steps listed below. Keep us updated on the results.

If you can’t send or receive messages on your Mac

Cheers!

Hello cturse,

Typically you can manage your contacts using the Contacts app in macOS. Contacts stored there can be used by the Messages app. Based on what you're describing you can also try manually entering in the contact details before sending the text messages. Should the issue persist you can reach out to support using the support link we provided above.

Warm regards.

Currently, my issues are only on my new iMac running Big Sur. If I send messages using my old iMac, my iPhone, or my iPad Pro, I can see the response in messages on my new iMac, but they show as a phone number rather than the name of the person to whom I sent a message. If I create a message from my new iMac to someone I haven't contacted recently, I get "error invalid number, please re-send using a valid 10 digit mobile number or valid short code." I haven't changed anything in my contacts. They don't have an extra 1, but they come back that way. It appears that my Apple id is the same on all devices.

I also can't get messages that are sent to me for 2-step authorization on my new iMac. They appear on all other devices.

I have signed out of Messages several times and back in.

So, I still need help.

Thanks,

Cindy

No luck yet.

My email address, telephone number and Apple ID are all checked, which I assume means they are on. Strangley there is a +1 in front of my phone number.

I deleted messages from a couple of friends, then tried to create new ones. They don't auto-fill as they have always done.

Where did you want me to delete contacts? from Google contacts?

Thanks,

Cindy
