Please could you help? I have recently purchased a Mac book and would like the familiarity of Microsoft Windows. Can this be installed on this Mac book?

Hi Denning1,

Congrats on purchasing your new Mac!

The main feature of any Mac is the operating system it ships with, macOS. If you just purchased yours brand new, it will ship with macOS Big Sur, the latest version of macOS. You can migrate your data onto macOS from your previous Windows computer using these steps: Move your data from a Windows PC to your Mac - Apple Support

Keep in mind that while macOS and Windows share some similarities, they do have some differences. Most of them are explained here: Mac tips for Windows switchers - Apple Support

Now, if you still really want to run Windows on your Mac, here's how to do that - if your Mac has an Intel processor. Unfortunately, if your Mac has the Apple M1 chip, that chip uses the ARM architecture, and Windows isn't officially built for that yet.

NOTE: When running Windows, the following features won't be available:

  • Touch ID (the fingerprint reader, if your Mac has one)
  • Automatic encryption provided by the T2 Security Chip, if your Mac has one
  • Force Touch on the trackpad
  • Trusted Platform Module (TPM): Your Mac doesn't have this. If you plan to use BitLocker (a Windows 10 Pro feature), make sure to enable "Require additional authentication at startup" in Group Policy: Computer -> Administrative Templates -> BitLocker Drive Encryption -> Operating system drives.

It will depend on which MacBook model you have. In order to use Microsoft Windows on your notebook, you basically have two choices:

  1. Use Boot Camp to create a separate Windows partition on your notebook's system drive. Install Windows on it, and then, selectively boot up to that partition when you want to run Windows.
  2. Instead of creating a separate partition, you could use a VM manager, like Parallels or VMware. You would then create a VM (virtual machine) of the version of Windows that you want to run. You then use the VM manager, like an app, to switch to Windows when you want to use it.
