Time Machine report discrepancy

I am getting two different dates from The Machine. When Time Machine is not actively backing up, I pull down its menu in the Menu Bar. The window that I pull down reports that the last back up was on January 8. But when I enter Time Machine and look at the list of bars on the right edge of the Desktop, Time Machine shows many backups since January 8, including one as recently as this morning, January 13.

Shouldn't those two dates agree?
