Getting Apple ID Verification codes by text but not pushed to devices

I've been getting random texts from 81961 saying "Your Apple ID Verification Code is: xxxxxx" with some random numbers. But, I'm not getting the usual pop-ups on my iPhone or Mac saying that someone wants access to my account and showing the location of the request and asking me to accept or deny. Is the text message a fake, or is it real and someone is just trying to get into my account? If it's real, do I need to change my password or something, or am I fine because the 2FA is protecting me?

Based on your comments, this appears to be a phishing text, intended to access your private information. We recommend:

Reviewing this helpful guide to Recognize and avoid phishing messages, phony support calls, and other scams.
Scrolling down "To report spam or other suspicious messages that you receive through iMessage, tap Report Junk under the message."
Following these steps to Block phone numbers, contacts, and emails on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
Noting this alert in the article "If you believe that your Apple ID has been compromised, or if you might have entered your password or other personal info on a scam website, Change your Apple ID password immediately."
