Disk Utility: Macintosh HD-Data red in my APFS Container disk1
Why is the Macintosh HD-Data red in my APFS Container disk1? I have tons of available memory. How do I know what's in there? Can I clear it?

The blue Macintosh HD is where the system is located and is on a read only volume. The red Macintosh HD - Data volume is where your files and applications are located and is a read and write volume for the user.
To know how much space you have on your drive just select the drive's icon on the Desktop and bring up the Info pane for it. It will show the capacity, used and available numbers. The Info pane is the more reliable method of determining file, folder or volume size.
Can you post a screenshot of what you're referring to?
Also what Mac year and model do you have?
How much free storage on your boot drive?
How much RAM do you have?
What system are you running?
Hi MrsBWC,
Here is how the Apple File System (APFS) Works:
APPLE HDD... is the physical hard drive.
Container disk1 is the shared space on your disk.
Macintosh HD is macOS and System Files.
Macintosh HD - Data is your user data.
Cheers,
Jack
Hi!
Sorry for the delay...but thank you for your reply.
It's an older Mac, but hasn't been our primary device. It's a late 2013 iMac
There's 863.49 GB available of 1TB
It has 8 GB 1600
We're running Catalina 10.15.7
I don't know much about tech, so I don't know if that's all you need
