I have had my iPad for approx 10 years. I need a screen protector and a case., but I don’t know what generation it is in. I received it as a gift and it’s still working fine. It must be one of the first ones made.

This is wrong. Only the more recent software updates have the full iPad Model name.
To get the iPad mode, you have to get the basic iPad model which starts with the latter A with numbers after it. To find your model, Identify your iPad model - Apple Support

I am going to clear up this issue once and for all.
Here is how we are going to find the year and model of your iPad.
The “A” model number of your iPad can be found on aluminium back of your iPad in small print right under the larger bold print “iPad”.
In addition, what iOS/iPadOS version is this iPad, currently, running?

Incorrect.
The full iPad model name - and generation - are only fully enumerated and displayed by more recent major versions of iOS/iPadOS.
Only the basic model number will be visible in older versions of iOS.
🔍 So this is what I found out : If you're sure that it is an iPad Air 2 , the generations begin
with the 3 rd in 2019 . I guess iPad Air 2 and 1 don't have generations ……
iPad Air = 2013 iPad Air 2 = 2014 , they both have wi-fi & cellular and a black or white
screen bezel ( the frame around front of the device ) . They're listed as far back as 2010 :

I did spend quite a bit of time researching my second answer .
This is my first iPad , I couldn't have known that there were so many versions before my
5th generation until I looked it up .
The rules state that it's not community etiquette to insult folks who haven't been here as
long as you have . 🤷♀️
