PowerPoint in Safari

PowerPoint in Safari

Hey all,
I'm a student at university in the UK and a lot of my lectures put the PowerPoint presentations they give on to the university website. But I can't view them in safari, is there any plug-in or even another Mac compatible web browser that would solve my problem?
When I try to view the presentation (in Safari), I get a pop-up window saying:

"This presentation contains content that your browser may not be able to show properly. This presentation was optimized for more recent versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer.
If you would like to proceed anyway, click here."

I continue, and I can see the presentation structure (the slide titles) but when I click on any slide its just blank.

Much as I hate to make such a chilling suggestion, my version of Office 2004 (professional) came with Virtual PC.

I haven't gotten around to loading it yet, and have heard it's slow, but if it's the only way to use a newer version of Explorer in a Microsoft environment without actually having to buy a new computer, it might be worth a try.

I don't think it was terribly expensive, if it didn't come with your version of Office.

Hopefully, someone else here has used Virtual PC and can let you know if it's a reasonable idea.

You could try a different browser, such as Firefox. If the presentation is in a format (a ppt or pps file) you can download, you can get the free Microsoft Powerpoint viewer. The viewer runs under Classic in OS X and it probably will not display some of the features of newer versions of Powerpoint.

Thank you for you help Tom, but annoyingly I have already bought Office 2004 and the ppt/pps files aren't available to download, you have to view the presentations in the browser. Also, I've tried Firefox but it was exactly the same. Someone recommended Opera but I can't find a plug in for that.

No, I found Opera (8.5) and even did the "Identify as Internet Explorer" thing, but it didn't work, the message

"This presentation contains content that your browser may not be able to show properly. This presentation was optimized for more recent versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer.

DIDN'T appear but the presentation slides were still blank. So I started to look for a PowerPoint Viewer plug-in for Opera but I couldn't find one.

I’ll have to talk to my lecturers and see they can change it.

You can save a Powerpoint presentation in html format from within Powerpoint. By saving the presentation in html format, any browser would be able to view the presentation. I have done exactly this in the past.

Unfortunately it’s one you have to log into.
Again, thank you for your help. I didn’t think much could be done, but I thought I’d ask. I’ll have to talk to my lecturers and see they can change it.
