Two phones, One Apple Id and ways to share

Trying to figure out the best practices for sharing things with two phones. For several years my wife and I just used the same apple id so all our purchases, contacts, and photos would sync. Sometimes IOS lets it play nice, other times not so much, depends on the update. We would see each other's phone calls, but that has gone away. Most recently with the purchase of some AirPods her phone kept taking over my audio. If I want to delete those from her phone it states it will delete it from all devices on the same cloud account. I think it's time to separate the two phones but what is the best way to still make sure all our photos, app store purchases and Apple One stay on the same account? Do we do two separate apple ids, but just one for the app store, then create a shared album? Will that shared be able to drop those photos into the mainstream or are they only kept on the second account?

Hi there!

  1. You or your wife would need to create your own Apple ID's
  2. The shared album means that the person that the album is being shared with can add the photos in the album to their iCloud Photos Library
  3. One of the best ways would be to keep the Apple One Plan and the App Store and iTunes Store purchases would be to set up Family Sharing. Here's an article from Apple Support to learn more: https://www.apple.com/family-sharing/, https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201088.* Unfortunately, Family Sharing won't let you see call history or contacts; Those will have to be shared via AirDrop, or via another sharing service.

*Family Sharing DOES NOT require a child

Hope this solves your problem!

This is the first issue as Apple ID's aren't meant to be shared.

I think it's time to separate the two phones but what is the best way to still make sure all our photos, app store purchases and Apple One stay on the same account?

There is no best way scenario except having separate Apple ID's.

Yes, separate ID's, not one for anything.

Will that shared be able to drop those photos into the mainstream or are they only kept on the second account?

You can share photos via Family Sharing with her.
