Email notifications

I have an XS and use gmail. I also just tried using outlook with the same result. I have noticed I do not get notified when I have an email like I do when I get a text. I have searches for help and it says to check in settings under Sounds and Haptics/Sounds and Vibration Patterns. There are choices to pick for sounds for ringtone, text tone, voicemail, etc.... and have seen that there should be one for email/gmail but there is not one there and I am wondering if that is why I do not get notifications. I have checked all the other suggestions in the notification settings and everything is set correctly. I did read that gmail may be the problem so that is why I set up an outlook account to see if it would work but it doesn't either. How do I fix this? I am a new iphone user. When I had Android, I was always notified of emails and texts. I am still trying to decide which I like better Android or Mac and this is a deciding factor. I have been missing important emails that unless I specifically go into my account and refresh, I don't get them. Help!

iPhone XS, iOS 14

Is Mail app set as your default? See it under Settings - Mail - Default App (if you don’t get this option you have Mail app installed only that can be set as default.

Check sound settings under Settings - Mail - Notifications - Gmail.

Also keep in mind with Attention Aware feature enabled if you are using your iPhone sound might be silent: https://support.apple.com/en-ie/HT208245

If you still don’t get the sound, try to delete the Mail app from the device then reinstall it via the App Store app. Your accounts will get disabled (not removed) when Mail app is removed, so go to accounts settings screen to re-enable Mail on your configured accounts.

It actually is set to 15 minutes. The problem isn't with it coming in though. The problem is I do not get notified like a beep or sound to let me know I have an email. When I go into the email app, it then automatically refreshes itself and I get it but I need to be notified instead of having to go into the email account every minute to see if I have a new email. I read somewhere to go to the area that I have the picture attached, sounds and haptics and to click on email and select a sound like it has with ringtone, text tone, etc...but there is no mail icon to pick from and I wonder if that is the reason? There is no tone associated with email/gmail. So with that not being there, how do you fix that, if that is the problem? I'm thinking it must be because every other setting is correct.

If you are talking about using Gmail account with the iOS Mail app, then very likely your issue is with wrong Fetch New Data settings. GMail allows push only with their native Gmail app or GSuits paid support accounts set as Exchange accounts, meaning if you use free account Google account then it will use Fetch with Mail app.

Go to Settings - Mail - Accounts- Fetch New Data; your Fetch Schedule is most likely set to Automatically meaning new emails, for those accounts that use Fetch, will arrive only when your iPhone is connected to power and Wifi at the same time. If that’s the case change it to one of time-based options, like “Every 15 Minutes”.
