I have a 24-inch, Early 2009 iMac w/ OSX 10.11.6 El Capitan. How can I update the OS to a newer version? I get nothing when I use: About This Mac >> Software Update.

Ok so the App Store Updates page only informs you of updates available for the OS you are currently
running. Moving to a newer OS is called an upgrade.
The unfortunate thing for you is your early 2009 iMac cannot upgrade any further Mac OS X 10.11.6
is as far as it goes.
