My IMac is among the models that can update all the way to Big Sur. It currently has MacOS X El Capitan. When I click software update, it says it’s up to date. What do I do?

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and download Big Sur through the link provided; it's a full-version upgrade and won't appear in the Updates list.
