What does it mean to lock your iPad?

You can lock it by tapping the top button or let it lock automatically based on the time selected in Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock.
Note that if you are doing an iCloud Backup via the "Backup Now" option you don't lock it. To backup automatically while charging I just let mine auto-lock as described above.
