The old fashioned way. By moving your body around and using your eyes to scout/hunt/look for it!
You could check your iPad by going into the Settings app, turning on Bluetooth and see if your Apple Pencil shows up in the Bluetooth device listings.
That will, at least, indicate that the Pencil is, at least, within a 30-50 foot radius of the iPad.
