Distorted sound coming out of Macbook (13-inch, Mid 2010)

Hi there!

For the last couple of weeks, the sound my Macbook has been putting out has been distorted, especially with the bass sounds. It doesn't matter whether I'm playing from YouTube or iTunes or on a video chat- it's all distorted and choppy. However, the sound is clear when I plug in headphones and listen that way.

Can anyone help me resolve this? I have already tried resetting the NVRAM and the SMC (service management controller).

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

MacBook, macOS 10.12

It sounds like at least one of your speakers is bad. You can try sliding the balance slider (in the Sound System Preferences "Output" tab) to the extreme right or left to see if the other speaker is Ok and use it with one speaker until you can get a replacement speaker(s).
