Thanks for your gracious and quick reply! Alas, the App Store doesn't seem to allow upgrades to Yosemite. There's a good chance I'm not looking hard enough, but the updates tab on the computer says no updates are available. :(
PS to the above whine: Using the link you provided (instead of the App Store) I was taken to the OS X El Capitan link and am currently downloading this version. Thank you so much for your on-target help, patience and quick reply.

Assuming you have MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2008), you can upgrade to a maximum of OS X 10.11.6.
Open Safari and visit here to do this.
The second link is newer and avoids a certificate issue.
