What recovery key is this? Filevault or AppleID?
Please provide some more details on what has occurred that you need a recovery key. Also include the exact model of your Mac and the version of macOS. You can get the exact model of the Mac by entering your serial number here:
I have the same problem with my MacBook Pro. I need a recovery key to login as my password stopped working. The key I generate has 28 characters but the MacBook Pro only accepts 24. I spoke to Apple Help and they couldn’t come up with a solution. It seems the recovery key is not a workable solution.

What type of recovery key are you talking about here (see my previous post to the OP)? I asked the OP, but they haven't responded back. Without knowing what type of recovery key it is impossible to advise you. It may also help to have more details of what led up to your current situation.
Still doesn't work, it only allows me to enter 24 digits
