how can my MacBook Pro serial number be invalid when I try to see if I can trade it in for a new model

How much older?
Are you sure it is not telling you, "too old to get money for it, but we can recycle it for you?"
[They only give you money for Macs that can be re-sold. If yours is really old, it may not have value for re-sale. By the time they install a new battery and fix it up, it may not be worth enough.]
It’s an older MacBook Pro but for some reason it won’t accept it’s own serial number. I even bought the three year Apple care contract when I got it. Now it’s out of warranty and though it works well I’d like a lighter unit. I tried to get some money for a trade in on a new air unit and that’s what happened.
I was interested in trading in my MacBook pro for a new model but when I put my serial number in it’s says it’s invalid ...how could that be
