iCloud can backup an iPhone or iPad but not a macbook air or iMac.

On your MacBook Air you can use iCloud as a sync service for your photos, mail, contacts, docs, ....

If you want a backup (and that is really necessary) connect an external drive and use TimeMachine (it’s already on your mac)
