I just set up my new Macbook Air, updated everything, and am having trouble with Word; it constantly hangs up. I only have three documents open but am getting the spinning ball every minute or so; it goes away in about 10 seconds but is very frustrating.

What version of Word and MS-Office do you have?
It might resolve if you completely uninstall all Office apps and reinstall. You will need your activation code.
One thing to try first is boot into Safe Mode and see if the issue goes away. If it goes away, that would implicate something you had installed. Do you have any anti-virus apps, cleaner type software, speed up utilities installed?

I'm having no issues with Word version 16.45 and Big Sur 11.1

Is Word the only problem here? What about Excel, Powerpoint? What kind of MS-Office installation do you have? Did you install it fresh or migrate it over from somewhere?

I migrated it over from my old computer. Haven't used the other apps as extensively but seems to only be Word.
