Tabs keep closing in safari when hitting red X button

Every time I close safari when hitting the red X button in the top left corner, all my tabs close.

I've changed it in preferences so "all windows from last session" is on (see image) however this only works when I quit safari completely, not close safari.

Is this a design flaw, glitch or am I missing a setting?

Cheers

Jamie

Hello jamiedck,

Thanks for asking the Apple Support Communities about Safari.

What you are experiencing sounds like the way Safari was designed. When you hit that red button, you are closing the window, and all the tabs. This creates a new Safari session.

This is why the setting works only when you Quit Safari, it has those last session links to pull up.

Another option would be to create bookmarks, and then reopen them with one click. this article has the info: Use tabs for webpages in Safari on Mac - Apple Support

Once you have your bookmark list created, secondary click on the bookmark title, and change your option from Open in New Tabs to Automatically Replace Tabs. Please be aware, this will replace the open tabs, with the bookmarked pages. If you do not have open pages, this will open them all. Thanks and have a wonderful day.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for responding.

If this is the way safari was designed, then it seams illogical. When clicking the red x on any software, the program stays active which can be seen with the little black dot next to the icon in the menubar, so it makes sense to keep the tabs active.

When quitting the program, you know that completely closes the program, which would make sense to close the tabs.

I've read a lot of other user comments in the same predicament. Maybe this is one aspect where apple software is not intuitive to its users.

Anyway just gotta get used to CMD+Q instead of hitting the red x.

Thanks again for responding and have a great day
